Stretcher Frame

We use 38 mm (1.5 inch) deep stretcher bars made from durable, knot-free European pine. The bars feature finger-jointed construction to keep the frame stable and help prevent warping over time. For larger formats, we add wooden corner wedges that allow the canvas to remain tightly stretched and make future re-tensioning easy if required.

The canvas is then carefully folded around all four sides and securely stapled to the back of the frame. To preserve the original image dimensions, we use a process known as "gallery wrapping."

For example, a 30 × 45 cm (12 × 18 inch) image is printed on a 40 × 55 cm (16 × 22 inch) canvas, providing an additional 5 cm (2 inches) on each side for wrapping around the frame. Of this margin, 38 mm (1.5 inches) covers the sides of the stretcher bar, while approximately 12 mm (0.5 inch) extends onto the back.

There are several ways to handle the wrapped edge area. Our preferred option is mirror wrapping. In this process, the image is mirrored along its outer edges, creating the appearance that the artwork naturally continues around the sides of the canvas.

Other wrapping options include:

• White edge
• Black edge
• Image wrap – the image itself is wrapped around the stretcher bars, which means that a small portion of the artwork disappears around the sides and is no longer visible from the front.

These alternative wrapping styles are available on request as custom orders.
